I took this photo as part of a theme of children's portraits when they weren't aware of the camera. This portrait I liked because the child is very much the center of interest. I like that he is to the left side of the photo but the tree trunk on the right helps balance the photo. The lighting coming from the left helps to highlight one side of his face creating a slight contrast to the right side of his face.

Surprise
Using my film camera I was taking pictures of eyes at an aperture of f/1.8. This aperture allows the photographer to get close and have a specific part of the image in focus, because the rest of the image quickly turns soft. This image stood out to me because her eyes are framed by a darker piece of cloth. The framing and the fact that her eyes are lighter than the rest of the picture helps draw the attention immediately to them. Since this image demonstrates economy of simplicity and because the eyes are framed, the image has a very strong center of interest.
Nature's Way
I began working on two themes for a few weeks, and one I chose was macro nature. I wanted to get as close as I could to display nature in a different way. This is one of my favorite photos in the series because it shows a different side of nature, it shows the harsher side. The snake is in focus, but the dog's mouth is slightly out of focus showing motion. Being macro gives the image a simplistic look that goes well with this image. If the whole dog were in the photo the same effect would not be displayed because the dog's teeth on the snake would no longer be as strong a point of interest.

Family
Family
Creating a family portrait that would be meaningful in five years was a fun project. I immediately thought of the two family pets that have been around for as long as I can remember, Kenai and Roxy. Kenai is a 12 year old german shepherd-husky mix, and Roxy is a 15 year old cat we acquired when our aunt had to amputate the leg of an unclaimed kitten. This is the only photo in which the whole family is with both of these loved pets. In five years there's a good chance neither of them will be around, so this photo will be very meaningful when they are no longer with us.

Pearls
When I started to work with flash strobe lighting I wanted something that would react a little differently with the light than a normal object. I decided on my pearl necklace because they were already shiny and I thought that the lighting would enhance their look. This photo stood out of the ones that I experimented with. The way that the bag is lit really brings out the texture. The partially lit string of pearls leads the eye through the rest of the photo, and adds sharp contrast to the background.

Hesitation
It was one of those days where my sister and I went out and photographed each other. We walked and occasionally stopped and took some photos. There is this old run down house along the driveway where we lived. She opened the back screen door of the house and looked back while I snapped photos. This one I played with a little and decided I liked the black and white look the best. I like how the door and the tree branch framed Paige.

Burnished Clarinet

The clarinet was the second instrument I decided to take up. I wanted to work with digital flash and wanted to make my clarinet the subject. I experimented with different angles until I got this photo. The variety in this photo is what caught my eye. There is a clear contrast difference and the way the light falls shows the texture of the well used clarinet.
